Hero Galway fishermen involved in another rescue

Hero Galway fishermen Patrick and Morgan Oliver were involved in another heroic rescue this morning.

The pair were out fishing when an alarm was raised that a swimmer had gotten into trouble off Salthill.

After a member of the public raised the alarm, the heroic pair spotted the man taking refuge on Palmer’s Rock about 200 metres from Salthill shore.

They took him on board their fishing boat and brought him back to Galway Docks. Galway Lifeboat in the meantime was stood down.

The man was taken into the Lifeboat station where he received treatment for symptoms of hypothermia until an ambulance arrived.

Deputy Launch Authority Seán Óg Leydon says many people who have taken up sea swimming this year during the Covid lockdown may not realise the dangers of winter swimming.

“The sea is a great resource for us but we have to respect it and our limits. Luckily this swimmer made his way to a place he could rest and wait for assistance.”

Patrick Oliver, 38 and his 18-year-old son Morgan were hailed for their role in saving the two females back in August.

Sara Feeney, 23 and Ellen Glynn, 17, had made the eight kilometre trip out to Furbo beach around 8pm to go for a paddle on what was a beautiful warm summer’s evening.

But the concern was raised around 9.30pm when they were no longer visible from the beach and a full scale alert was issued at 10pm.

Irish Coastguard helicopters from Shannon and Sligo searched throughout the night along with a number of lifeboat crews from Galway, Aran, Doolin and Costelloe Bay, with several private leisure and working boats joining the search at first light.

But the father and son correctly worked out their location off the Aran Islands using tidal and weather information.
