Hero frontline worker who gave first COVID vaccine to Dublin supergran hailed 'most caring, hard-working nurse' in Ireland'

History was made today as Liberties grandmother-of-ten Annie Lynch became the first person to be vaccinated against COVID in Ireland.

Photos of Annie being given the jab have gone around the world, with news agencies as far a field as Australia reporting on the 79-year-old Dubliner and showing photos of her receiving the vaccine.

But little has been said about the other person in the now viral photo.

The nurse who can be seen administering Annie with the Pfizer/BioNTech produced shot is Deborah Cross, whose colleagues at St James's Hospital have hailed as a "lovely, positive woman".

"Deborah is the quintessential nurse," a fellow frontline worker at the city centre hospital told Dublin Live today.

"Honestly - she really is one of the hardest working people in the entire hospital. She's never afraid to get stuck in, and is a brilliant problem solver."

The mother-of-two from Kildare has worked at St James's for almost 20 years and is hugely admired amongst her colleagues.

The CNM 3 (clinical nurse manager) has a "hugely pressurised job" in the surgical directorate, but pals at St James's say it's a role the popular frontline healthcare professional relishes.

"Nothing fazes her - she really is a trooper," they continued. "She's everything a nurse should be and she's a wonderfully kind and caring person.

"Honestly - she's just the most hard-working nurse you could ever hope for, and never has that been more evident than since the coronavirus pandemic struck."

The image of Deborah giving Drimnagh gran Annie the first jab to a non-frontline worker in the country has made headlines from Sydney in Australia to North Carolina in the States.

Annie is a true Dub who grew up in the Liberties. Sadly, the mother of three lost her beloved husband John earlier this year.

One of her ten grandchildren works in St. James's and she was with her for the historic moment.

Afterwards Annie said she felt "very privileged to be the first person in Ireland to receive the vaccine".

Beaumont Hospital and St. James's in Dublin as well as Cork University Hospital and University Hospital, Galway, began administering the Pfizer BioNTech jab in Ireland today.
