Hero firefighter clings onto baby in daring rescue from blaze that left 17 dead

A brave firefighter inches down a ladder holding a baby rescued from a blaze in an apartment block caused by a faulty heater.

New York City’s worst fire disaster in more than 30 years claimed at least 17 lives, including those of nine children.

Around 200 firefighters responded to the inferno that engulfed the 19-storey building.

A witness filmed the baby being rescued as fire crews battled to save those trapped inside.

Mayor Eric Adams said: “Their oxygen tanks were empty, and they still pushed through the smoke.”

Another 32 people were sent to hospital, several of whom are in a critical condition.

New York fire commissioner Daniel Nigro confirmed that a portable heater sparked the fire in a bedroom in the Bronx, north east of Manhattan, shortly before 11am on Sunday.

He said that “very heavy” fire and smoke “extended the entire height of the building”.

“We are investigating where everyone was found, and how the smoke travelled,” he added.

“But marshals have determined that this fire started in a bedroom, in a portable heater. The heat was on in the building. This [portable heater] was being used to supplement the heat.”

A group representing survivors and bereaved families of the Grenfell Tower tweeted: “We are devastated to hear this news. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and all those affected.”

The Grenfell fire in West London on June 14, 2017, killed 72 people.

Phase two of a public inquiry is currently examining how the tower came to be coated in flammable cladding materials that contributed to the spread of flames, which shot up the building.
