A hero driver who stopped to save a dog he spotted running off its lead was struck by a car.

The man, in his 30s, was airlifted to hospital after being run over by a Ford Mondeo car on Fender Lane, Prenton , at around 12pm today.

Merseyside Police said he sustained leg and head injuries and is in a serious but stable condition.

A spokeswoman for the force said: "The man, who is in his 30s, is believed to have been driving when he saw a dog with no lead. He stopped his car and tried to catch the dog, when the collision has taken place.

"Emergency services attended and the man was treated for suspected leg and head injuries. He has been taken to hospital by Air Ambulance.

"Fender Lane is currently closed from Bidston roundabout towards Moreton and motorists are urged to use other routes if possible to avoid delays."
