Hero driver moves burning car away from shoppers as fireball erupts at Tesco

A motorist was hailed a hero after driving a burning car away from shoppers moments before it erupted into a fireball in a Tesco car park.

Witnesses said the "brave" driver risked injury to move the flaming vehicle away from other vehicles and customers at the supermarket in Plymouth, Devon.

Video recorded by shopper Katrin Ruth Cummins shows the blue car completely engulfed in flames as a huge cloud of black smoke billows into the sky on Saturday afternoon.

Ms Cummins told PlymouthLive that the owner of the car was standing behind the vehicle waiting for an ambulance to arrive after the fire broke out shortly after 4pm.

Local residents reported seeing the plume of smoke from miles away.

They praised the "brave" driver for moving the burning car away from shoppers and other cars to protect others.

A witness said: "The car caught alight while it was in a parking bay close to the entrance.

"The guy jumped in and drove it round the back car park where it was clearer so as not to let other cars parked nearby to also catch fire.

Smoke from the car fire was seen several miles away, say local residents (Plymouth Herald)

"We were parked three spaces away."

Ms Cummins said: "[We were] about to go in Lidl and we saw a fire at the end of car park in Tesco.

"We don't really know what happened. An ambulance came as well."

Speaking from the scene before the blaze was extinguished, she added: "The fire is really big.

"I thought the fire [was coming] from the charity shop so we check it out to find out its a car.

"Then the owner of the car was standing behind of his car and waiting for the ambulance to come."

Firefighters put out the inferno, the cause of which was "accidental".

It wasn't known if anyone was injured.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "Fire Control received multiple reports of a vehicle on fire at [Transit Way, Plymouth] this afternoon.

"One fire engine from our Camels Head fire station was mobilised immediately.

"On arrival crews confirmed one vehicle to be well alight and set to work with two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, extinguishing the fire using two hose reel jets.

"The fire was quickly dealt with and the incident was complete.

"Crews confirmed the cause of the fire to be accidental."
