Hero DFB firefighters rescue husky from drowning in swollen river

Hero DFB firefighters saved a husky dog after it fell into a bitterly cold river near Lucan yesterday.

The fearless crew braved the freezing cold waters to pluck the poor pup from the swollen rapids.

They tweeted: "Firefighters this afternoon rescuing a husky dog from a swollen river in Lucan.

"The animal rescue services will normally attend first & request our help if needed but if not, never jeopardise your own safety, particularly around water. Call 999 / 112 for assistance.”

It emerged during a Dublin City Council meeting last week that the Dublin Fire Brigade perform more water rescues than they do fire every year.

During a presentation into the controversial white water rafting facility planned in Dublin's docklands, the DFB gave its support for the centre saying it will provide them with vital training facilities.

Among those who voted in favour of the facility is Social Democrats councillor Gary Gannon, who took to social media to explain his reason for supporting the plan.

He said: "It’s a strange one admittedly but I placed aside my reservations when a senior member of the Dublin Fire Brigade outlined how important this facility will be to their work.

"They outlined that they rescue more people from water than they do fires each year. The current facilities they use aren’t suitable and place their members at risk."

A senior fire officer said a number of people previously took ill on courses while using the Upper Liffey, and that a lack of rainfall has also led to training not going ahead.
