'Hero' delivery driver praised for finding man's missing dogs

A young delivery driver was hailed a "hero" after frantically searching for a man's two missing dogs.

James Wilson has recently moved to Formby. He says he got "split up" from his dogs at the beach on Friday, and didn't think they would know their way home yet.

Abbey Foy was working a delivery shift for the Crispy Cod chip shop when she saw the dogs in the street.

The 21-year-old said: "I came onto Queens Road and saw three teenagers trying to catch two dogs. The dogs looked petrified.

"I asked if they were their dogs and if they needed help and they said they had come from the beach.

"I got out of my car, along with a few other people and began trying to catch these dogs, but they were so fast and scared. Staff from the Co-op came out and brought dog treats to try and help, but eventually the dogs were out of sight again."

People got back in their cars, and when the road cleared, Abbey drove around looking for the dogs.

She continued: "I drove side by side one of them running for a while before getting out again. This stopping and starting went on for about half an hour, we nearly had them but they got away again.

"A woman stopped me and gave me her dog lead in case it helped. Another woman in a car put her window down and told me she had seen both the dogs run right to the end of the road.

"I drove around Formby for about 10 minutes doing laps, but I couldn’t see them and was starting to get worried."

After searching many streets, Abbey saw the same group of teenagers who told her the dogs were in a close around the corner.

She added: "I went down there and they were both sat on a drive behind a car! I couldn't believe it, they had actually ran home."

On Facebook, James wrote: "Abbey Grace Foy, thank you, and everyone that helped, for getting my dogs home safe.

"I only moved to Formby last week so didn’t expect them to try and make it home.

"I had heard how warm and kind the Formby community is; thank you again to all those that helped. Please know how embarrassed and apologetic I am."

One person commented, calling Abbey "a hero", while another said "This is such good news!"
