Hermes driver puts package in bin only for it to be emptied by refuse collectors

A Hermes courier has been captured on CCTV stuffing a "signed for" package into a bin - which then proceeded to be emptied by refuse collectors.

In the images the delivery driver can be seen putting the package into a wheelie bin.

The pricey package was for saloon racing champ Gary Pebble and contained hundreds of pounds worth of vital spare parts for his Honda Civic EG racing car.

Gary even forked out extra to ensure they were securely shipped from Southampton to his Worcestershire-based Reyland Motorsport business.

They were delivered on the Bank Holiday Monday at the start of this month when his business was shut for the day.

But rather than taking the package back to schedule a redelivery, Gary later found out when he checked the proof of delivery that the Hermes driver signed for the delivery himself with an indistinct “squiggle”.

The driver took a photo as proof of “delivery”, then hops in his vehicle and drives away.

To make matters worse, the next day Gary's CCTV cameras showed a blue Fortress Recycling truck arrive to collect the rubbish.

But it was not until the following day that Gary realised something was wrong when he chased up the delivery on the car components.

He checked his CCTV, and learned the worst.

He told the Sun : "Watching that video was just soul-destroying.

"It was worth about £100 but it was vital to measure the new part I paid £5,000 for."

Gary now needs to order a new component and mechanic Martin Hadland will need to start the job from scratch – leaving Gary in danger of not being ready for the start of the new season.

"I have had to order a new part and hope it arrives in time and is fitted before the season starts," he said.

"Hopefully it will be here, but it is just so annoying."

A spokesperson for Hermes said: "We are already in contact with the customer and are dealing with the issues."

The Mirror has contacted Hermes for further comment.
