Here’s how to save on last season’s On gear – plus my top picks as a fitness writer

Having tested a fair few of On's best running shoes, these are my top picks from the brand's 'last season' offers - (Harry Bullmore/The Independent)

Premium products rarely come cheap – the clue is in the name. But for a limited time only, On is offering customers the chance to pick up some of last season’s most popular items for less.

The running brand’s “last season” section features footwear favourites such as the cloudmonster 2, cloud X 4 and cloudsurfer next, as well as running jackets, shorts, tights, t-shirts and more. These are available for up to 40 per cent less than their regular price.

This means, whether you’re looking to equip yourself for an upcoming marathon, pick up some running gear for your daily miles or simply stock up on comfortable activewear, now is a good time to shop.

Having tested a fair few of On’s bestselling products, I’ve selected a couple of products I think are worthy of your consideration.

On cloudmonster 2

My pick of the bunch are the On cloudmonster 2’s. Having tested them, and their successor, I found these shoes do right what many other max-cushioned running pairs do wrong.

The ‘cloudtec’ cushioning in the midsole (a signature of the brand) provides a supportive, springy ride. But it’s not so plush that your feet sink with each stride, sapping your energy. This leads to greater stability than your average max-cushioned shoe, and an extra lick of pace too, making it suitable for everything from easy runs to interval sessions.

As is now expected from On products, the cloudmonster 2’s also look fantastic. The clean design and non-comical proportions are at odds with other maximalist shoes on the market and their unwieldy stacks of underfoot foam.

The shoes are currently £100, rather than the usual £170, but they are only available at this price for a short period.

On cloud X 4

My other recommendation is this pair of On cloud X 4’s – now £95 rather than £140. This is the brand’s take on a hybrid training shoe, and a model I have taken with me on several holidays on account of its versatility. Whether I want to run or lift, they do a decent job on both fronts.

The X 4’s still feature On’s ‘cloudtec’ cushioning, comfortably seeing me through distances of up to 10km. But they also have added stability features such as a grippy rubber outsole and midfoot cage, meaning exercise classes and strength training exercises are also within their repertoire.

I wouldn’t wear them for exercises like heavy barbell squats and deadlifts, as there is a slight rocker and still some compression in the midsole when you get under weights of 100kg and above. But for fans of HIIT workouts and Hyrox classes, the blend of comfort, cushioning and stability will make for an excellent gym companion.
