Here's why you should never leave your hand sanitiser in the car

We're all being a lot more vigilant these days when it comes to washing our hands.

The best way, of course, to protect yourself against the spread of coronavirus is to do it the old fashioned way.

But if you're out and about grabbing your essentials, you probably don't have access to soap and water, and are more likely to rely on hand sanitiser.

Quick and easy to use, especially when you're on the go, we've all got a bottle or two kicking about our bags or pockets, especially at the moment.

But as RSVPLive reports, there are a few experts who warn that there's one place you really shouldn't ever leave hand sanitiser - and that's in your car.

Florida Gold Coast University Associate Professor Dr Greg Boyce told Drivetribe that this is definitely not a good idea.

Warm temperatures can cause the alcohol in the sanitiser to evaporate, meaning they are rendered useless.

Temperatures inside a vehicle such as a car can quickly become scorching, especially if it has been parked in direct sunlight.

As alcohol is the active ingredient that's killing bacteria and viruses, the product won't be able to work the way it is supposed to without it.

Warm hand sanitiser can also irritate the skin, so be cautious when applying it.

And it's not just the danger to yourself you have to worry about.

Hand sanitiser could also damage your car, if it leaks.

Ford engineers have conducted research into this and found that the ingredients in the sanitiser can cause the interior surfaces of your car to wear prematurely, which is not ideal.
