Here’s why the AAF’s Stallions have so many ex-Broncos

Broncos fans who tuned in to Alliance of American Football games over the weekend probably noticed a few familiar faces.

AAF teams acquire the rights to a player based on affiliated colleges in their region. For example, the Orlando-based team has rights to players from FSU. If a player is from an unaffiliated college, his rights go to the team in the region of his most recent NFL or CFL team. (Players without an affiliated college or NFL/CFL experience are free agents.)

Salt Lake City has the rights to players from colleges including Colorado State and Northern Colorado (San Diego gets players from the University of Colorado). Salt Lake City also has rights to former Denver Broncos players that did not play for an affiliated college.

That’s part of the reason why the Salt Lake Stallions have six former Broncos on their roster: wide receiver Jordan Leslie, wide receiver Kenny Bell, tight end Austin Traylor, offensive lineman Jeremiah Poutasi, offensive lineman Leon Johnson and kicker Taylor Bertolet.

Other ex-Broncos in the AAF include safety Rahim Moore (Arizona), linebacker Steven Johnson (Arizona) and defensive back Orion Stewart (San Antonio). The new league has received mostly positive reviews so far.
