Superman is the most famous and well-known comic book character in the history of pop culture. This fact is true, even if Superman is not as popular with modern fans. In fact, Batman is more popular than Superman with modern fans. While fans love Superman, he is hard to relate to because he is so omnipotent. He has invulnerable skin, can fly, has super speed and reflexes, heat vision, X-ray vision, and numerous other powers. It’s obvious to see from the way he is written that Superman will never really die.
Depending on who writes the character, Superman is basically immortal. Yes, Superman infamously died in 1992 at the hands of Doomsday. Still, the Man of Steel came back to life. Superman had limited powers when he made his debut in Action Comics #1 in 1938. He didn’t even fly back then; he only leapt tall heights.
However, his power has become nearly omnipotent in recent decades. Think of Superman as a living solar battery that always retains its energy. Every cell in Superman’s body absorbs the light from a yellow sun. This is the power source that gives Superman his powers.
Technically, Superman should be immortal. Superman will never really die, if you really think about it. Here are six legendary Superman stories that prove this point.
1. Superman vs. Muhammad Ali Deluxe
Superman vs. Muhammad Ali is a 1978 comic book one-shot. Muhammad Ali, the greatest boxer of his generation at the time, licensed his likeness for use in the comic. An alien race threatens to destroy the planet unless Earth’s greatest champion fights for them. Superman and Muhammad Ali are sent to a gladiator world with a red sun.
Superman is powerless and akin to a human under a red sun. Ali beats up Superman, wins the fight, and saves the planet. Superman has been made powerless by a red sun in many situations, but still, Superman will never really die in such situations.
2. The Death of Superman
In 1992 and 1993, the world was stunned when DC announced that Superman would die. An alien monster known as Doomsday was tortured endlessly in his formative years. Doomsday has the power to resurrect himself, no matter how many times he dies.
Doomsday literally beat Superman to death. However, it would soon come back to life. This event, while groundbreaking for its time, helped to prove that Superman will never really die.

3. All-Star Superman
All-Star Superman is a legendary non-canonical 2005 comic book. Lex Luthor finds a way to make the cells in Superman’s body overdose on yellow sun energy. Superman begins to slowly die. Before his death, he embarks on a series of adventures to show his love for the world and inspire it even more. Superman flies into the sun at the end of the story; some fans theorize that he might really be dead.
4. DC One Million
In the 853rd century, the far-flung descendants of the Justice League must protect the world from Solaris. Solaris is a celestial A.I. that lives in the heart of a star. Kal Kent, the 853rd-century descendant of Superman, is a part of the Justice League.
However, the original Superman, Clark Kent, is still alive. He has spent over 15,000 years in exile in space, living inside the sun. Superman has absorbed so much yellow sun energy that his skin and costume have taken on a golden hue. He is now truly God-like, omnipotent, and immortal. This 1998 story proves that Superman will never really die.
5. Superman Unlimited
Kryptonite is a rare rock that contains fragments from Superman’s home world. Superman weakens incredibly and technically could die when exposed to kryptonite. People who have never read a Superman comic know this.
However, this fact has now changed. In Superman Unlimited #1, Superman saves the Earth from being destroyed by a kryptonite mass the size of a meteor. The feat left Superman so weak that he fell into a 90-day coma.
After awakening, Superman finds that he is now immune to kryptonite. Also, he learns he has golden skin when exposed to specific kinds of light.
If DC writers have their way, Superman will never really die.
6. Superman: Lost
Superman: Lost is a 10-issue 2023 series. After going on an international mission with the Justice League, Superman falls into a black hole and is transported an incalculable distance away from Earth. So, Superman is lost in space. Even Superman needs to breathe to survive. So, he trains himself to spend months and even years holding his breath while adrift in deep space.
Superman spends over 20 years surviving mostly in the vacuum of space, trying to get back home to Earth and his wife, Lois. It is a poignant and interesting story that proves that Superman will never really die.
Superman Will Never Really Die
In 1986, writer and artist John Byrne would depower Superman significantly in his series Man of Steel. Byrne did this to help modern audiences relate to the character better. However, Superman has been made stronger since. Superman is a God-like being with incredible powers. Unless he is killed under a red sun, Superman can’t die. If his body is exposed to a yellow sun afterwards, he still might be able to be resurrected.
Superman will never really die, and could probably exist until the last yellow sun blinks out of existence at the end of the universe.
