Here's why Sunderland's kick off against Oldham in the Papa John's trophy was delayed

Kick-off in Sunderland’ s EFL Trophy game at Oldham Athletic has been delayed by 20 minutes after their team coach arrived late at Boundary Park due to an accident on the M62.

The accident saw two lanes shut on the motorway, which led to long traffic jams which held up Lee Johnson and his players.

The second round tie was due to kick-off at 6pm, but the team did not arrive until 5.20pm.

And that meant kick-off was delayed until 6.20pm.

The game is new head coach Johnson’s second in charge of the Wearsiders, and pits him against the club where he started his managerial career in 2013.
