Here's why Spencer Torkelson isn't on the Detroit Tigers' 60-man player list yet

DETROIT _ The Detroit Tigers' player pool for the 2020 season, submitted Sunday afternoon, featured most of the names expected earlier in the week. But there were a couple questions: Where was No. 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson? And why didn't outfielder Troy Stokes Jr. make the team?

Fear not, Tigers fans, Torkelson will be added before the team's second wave of spring training _ dubbed "Summer Camp" _ scheduled to begin July 3 with pitcher and catcher workouts at Comerica Park.

On Sunday, the Tigers added most of their top prospects not on the 40-man roster, including right-handers Alex Faedo, Matt Manning, Casey Mize, left-hander Tarik Skubal and outfielder Riley Greene.

The Tigers submitted 58 names, leaving themselves some wiggle room. Only one player from the team's 2020 draft class _ not including Torkelson, who remains unsigned _ was selected: catcher Dillon Dingler, their second-round pick out of Ohio State.

Stokes was the only player on the 40-man roster not included in the player pool It is unknown why _ Stokes appeared to have opened enough eyes this spring, hitting .273 in 22 at-bats. Perhaps he was injured.

In addition to a crop of outfielders that includes Daz Cameron, Travis Demeritte and Derek Hill, the team included Jorge Bonifacio in its player pool.

Generally speaking, the team could have taken a bigger swing at their player pool _ second baseman Kody Clemens was considered an option _ or perhaps added more players from this year's draft, but an important part of the process is establishing enough depth to get through the season.

In a 60-game season with likely no minor leagues, there will be fewer overall players available for the Tigers to call on should injuries hit.

One notable name of the bunch is Brady Policelli, a catcher who has moved around the diamond in the minor leagues. The Tigers really like Policelli and figure to add to his versatility during this time.
