Here’s why Drew Lock took his backup QB, Jack Lowary, to the NFL draft

Drew Lock attended the NFL draft in Nashville, Tennessee last month and he took a special friend with him: Missouri teammate Jack Lowary.

Lowary wasn’t one of Lock’s wide receivers or tight ends. He was his backup quarterback with the Tigers from 2017-2018, appearing in just one game. Despite their starter-backup statuses, the two QBs hit it off during their time at Missouri.

“After my freshman year, it was a rougher freshman year, Jack ended up transferring and I’m the QB,” Lock said during a conference call with reporters on April 26. “I was bulking my chest out, walking around with the high hat and didn’t give him the time of day when he first got here. It took us about a week to be almost best friends.”

The two quarterbacks formed a special bond together quickly, in part because they did everything together — literally.

“We lived with each other for three years and went to every meeting together,” Lock said. “We got to leave the house at the same time, always eat at the same place at the same time, took the same degree. He ended up being ideal for me. Helped me so much on the field and helped me so much in the film room. He’s a super smart guy and actually ended up coaching for the university now.”

Lock decided to take Lowary with him to Nashville and he was selected by the Broncos in the second round of the draft. It was fitting that the QB who helped him get there was present when Lock was selected.

“It couldn’t have been a better guy for me to meet when I was there,” Lock said. “He means so much to me and my development since my freshman year, and I feel like I needed to kind of repay him for that and bring him here and go through this experience with him. I think he had a pretty good experience.”

Lowary has retired from football and now serves as an assistant coach with the Tigers.
