Here’s why Broncos won’t have season-long team captains in 2019

Former Broncos coaches Mike Shanahan, Josh McDaniels, John Fox, Gary Kubiak and Vance Joseph all had season-long team captains during their tenures in Denver. New coach Vic Fangio is changing things up.

Fangio said after practice Monday that the team will have game day captains in 2019 instead of season-long captions. So the team’s captains may change on a week-to-week basis.

Fangio explained his decision on Wednesday.

“I just think everybody’s got the license to become a leader on the team,” Fangio said. “You don’t need to be appointed. I think leadership is something that somebody takes; it’s not granted to them, whether it be by a coaching staff or a vote. You take it. You don’t get proclaimed that.”

Last year, the Broncos’ team captains were quarterback Case Keenum (offense), center Matt Paradis (offense), linebackers Von Miller (defense) and Todd Davis (defense), kicker Brandon McManus (special teams) and fullback Andy Janovich (special teams).

Denver’s game day captains for Week 1’s showdown against the Oakland Raiders are expected to be revealed on Monday.
