The Washington Redskins had a hard time against the pass in 2019.
Besides a breakout like Quinton Dunbar, the Redskins didn’t have much going for them in terms of pass defense.
That’s an idea reinforced by the team’s middling rank of 23rd amongst all NFL teams in coverage grade at Pro Football Focus.
Solomon Wilcots broke it down:
“The Washington Redskins struggled all year long against the pass, and nowhere is that better reflected than in their 23rd-ranked team coverage grade of 57.1. This group allowed the fifth-most EPA per pass play from Week 1 to Week 17, and they allowed the third-most touchdown passes of any team in the NFL (35).”
It’s no secret the Redskins figure to make plenty of changes to the secondary this offseason, perhaps starting with veteran corner Josh Norman. Those in control near season’s end made a point to throw young guys out there to see what the roster had depth-wise.
With Jack Del Rio now in control of the defense and the schematic change on the way, it should be interesting to see how the production from the secondary changes. That, plus roster additions and subtractions, has the potential to helpt the Redskins climb in this area in 2020.
