Here's when students in NSW, Victoria and the ACT will return to face-to-face teaching at school

Hundreds of thousands of school kids have been learning from home as south-eastern Australia trudges through extended lockdowns.

Home learning will return for most students on Monday after two weeks' holidays, but locked down areas all have plans for a return to face-to-face teaching over the next month.

You can jump to your local plan here, or read on for a rundown of how schools are reopening.

When do NSW kids go back to school?

NSW students will go through a phased reintroduction of in-person schooling.

The school plan has been amended twice, once by former premier Gladys Berejiklian and then again by new Premier Dominic Perrottet.

Kindergarten, year 1 and year 12 students will now return to face-to-face learning on October 18.

All other grades will return the following week on October 25.

When do ACT kids go back to school?

Earlier this week, the ACT government announced a plan to have all kids back in the classroom by November 1.

It had already announced that students in year 12 will return to the classroom on October 5 and year 11 on October 18.

Younger students in preschool, kindergarten and years 1, 2, 6, 9 and 10 return to school the following week, on October 25.

The week after that, on November 1, students in years 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8 will return to the classroom.

When do kids in Victoria go back to school?

In Victoria, the changes will be different depending on whether your kids go to school in Melbourne or the regions.

If your school is in metropolitan Melbourne, year 12s will return to the classroom full time from Wednesday, October 6.

For other grades, it's a little more complicated, as kids will be returning to class part time, with remote learning for the other days of the week.

Students in prep will return to class from Monday, October 18, but only on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Children in year 1 and year 2 will have in-person classes on Thursdays and Fridays from October 21.

Then a big change will come in on Tuesday, October 26:

  • Students in years 3 and 4 will return to class on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
  • Students in years 5 and 6 will return for Thursdays and Fridays
  • Year 7 students will return full time
  • Students in years 8 and 9 will return Tuesdays and Wednesdays
  • Year 10s will return on Thursdays and Fridays
  • Year 11 will return full time

These arrangements will remain in place until Friday, November 5, after which all students are expected to be back in the classroom full time.

In regional Victoria it's a different, as yet untold story.

While the government says it plans for students in prep, year 1, year 2 and final year to return to the classroom from Monday, October 4, it hasn't announced details for other students.
