Here’s when someone in their 20s can expect a vaccine in Ireland

In the UK, 20-year-olds started receiving their vaccines a fortnight ago.

As for Ireland, the likelihood of when exactly people in their 20s can expect a jab is unclear.

A few months ago, the Government said that it was aiming to have offered a first dose Covid-19 vaccine to all adults by the end of June.

While the portal to register for a jab was opened up to those aged 40 to 44 this week, there has been no announcement yet of an exact date when the vaccine portal will be opening up to under 40s and under 30s.

That's also just the registration portal, those in their 50s are still only receiving their vaccines now. Some in their 40s may not even receive a jab until early July.

The programme in Ireland has been plagued with issues since it first began and supply problems have hampered its progress.

However, there are hopes the rollout can significantly ramp up with more deliveries expected and the vaccine registration portal opening up to the next cohorts.

Ireland is to receive over 600,000 doses of the Janssen jab by late June, by which point the majority of the over-50s cohort should already be vaccinated.

Last month, Taoiseach Micheál Martin told the Dáil that he’s aiming for 82 percent of the adult population to have been offered a jab by the end of June.

He also hinted that the Government thinks we could be administering as many as 450,000 vaccines by mid-June.

How does this fare out for younger people?

We’re just about halfway through the list of non-high-risk cohorts to be offered a vaccine.

The next group that will be invited to register will be those aged 35 to 40. This group will more than likely receive a Covid-19 vaccination by next month.

Unfortunately those who are younger, they will have to wait slightly longer as the HSE predicts it will definitely not be until July when the first people aged 25 to 34 will receive their initial jab.

While the HSE is suggesting that those in their 20s should be offered a vaccine by July, it could actually take longer, depending on how high the vaccine rate climbs.

People in their 20s have at least one million others in front of them in the queue for a Covid jab, according to Omnicalculator.com.

If the vaccine rate stays as it is, anyone aged 20 should expect to receive a first dose of vaccine between July 24 and August 13.

As for a second dose, they'll be waiting until early September.

However, if the rollout ramps up to 450,000 per week as the Taoiseach suggested, anyone aged 20 is looking at early July to receive a first jab.

These next few weeks of “ramping up” will determine how likely a July date is for those in their 20s to finally receive a vaccine against Covid-19.
