Liverpool's new £50m cruise terminal moves step closer to opening

Liverpool's stunning new cruise terminal could be built as early as 2021.

The development would see the existing derelict jetty demolished and replaced by a new terminal on a jetty in the Mersey.

A new 200-bed hotel would also be built alongside it.

And images released last year show how the striking new waterfront building would welcome passengers into Liverpool.

The council won outline planning permission for the scheme in April.

However the authority has since had to clear other hurdles before the project can progress, though officers said earlier this year the project is still on track to open in 2021.

A new application for listed building consent has been submitted by the council, which would give it the all clear to construct the parts of the new jetty and terminal which would affect the waterfront's harbour wall, which is a protected structure.

This looks set to be approved by the local authority's planning committee on Tuesday.

The new jetty, on Princes Dock, will allow more voyages to start and end in the city, giving another boost to Liverpool 's booming tourism industry.

The report reads: "The submitted Heritage Statement identifies an impact of ‘lower end of less than substantial’ in regard to the grade II listed seaward retaining wall entrance to Princes Half Tide Dock.

"The proposed works will inevitably result in some level of change to the archaeological and architectural value of the listed dock entrance."

The new terminal would enable larger vessels of up to 3,600 passengers to visit Liverpool.

Last year Liverpool welcomed 60 vessels, with 100,000 passengers and crew.

The council estimates the existing cruise terminal brings £7m a year to the city’s economy.
