Another day, another Netflix banger to accompany your winter blues, amirite? While this show isn’t as light and silly as Sirens, The Survivors has hooked audiences with its grimey storyline and its underlying message that scarily echoes how crime stories are treated IRL.
Netflix’s The Survivors — which is based on the book of the same name by Aussie author Jane Harper — follows Kieran Eliott (Charlie Vickers), who returns to his hometown of Evelyn Bay (nothing like Summer Bay BTW) to help his sick father. However, upon his return, he’s haunted by a traumatic incident from 15 years earlier, where his brother, Finn (Remy Kidd), and his friend, Toby Gilroy (Talon Hopper), died while trying to rescue him from a cave.
Alongside Finn and Toby, Gabby Birch (Eloise Rothfield) also died in the caves, but her body was never found. Instead, it was speculated that she had just disappeared following the tragic incident.
With Kieran returning to Evelyn Bay, alongside his partner Mia Chang (Yerin Ha) and their bub, the pair are rocked by the tragedy once more after Bronte Laidler’s (Shannon Berry) death unravels secrets from the past, exposing what really happened to Gabby during that tragic incident.

Who is Bronte Laidler in The Survivors?
Bronte Laidler is a photographer and waitress who came to Evelyn Bay to delve deeper into the mystery of Gabby Birch, who disappeared 15 years earlier.
After discovering what really happened to Gabby Birch 15 years earlier, she is found dead on the shores of Evelyn Bay.
What happened to Gabby Birch in The Survivors?
On that fateful day, Gabby wanted to venture into the caves to see Kieran. To help her spelunk on through, Sean Gilroy (Thom Green) took her there. While they didn’t find Kieran, Sean and Gabby decided to carve their names on the side of one of the caverns.
During this moment, Sean decided to kiss Gabby, which she didn’t like. Following the kiss, Gabby demanded to be guided out of the caves so she could go home.
But instead of doing so, Sean decided to leave her in the depths of Evelyn Bay’s caves because he felt “stupid” over the rejection.
“I felt so stupid, so I bolted,” Sean told Kieran later on.
As a result of Sean’s fury and embarrassment, Gabby was left alone in the caves, where she tragically drowned.
What happened to Bronte Laidler in The Survivors?
This is your last and final spoiler warning. If you’ve made it here, then you’re gonna be bloody spoiled!
In the end, Bronte finally puts the pieces together and discovers that Sean was behind Gabby’s death/disappearance.
“Most people have forgotten about Gabby,” Bronte tells Sean. “All the memorial stuff is all about the men. Why isn’t she included?”
Instead of owning up to his actions and copping the consequences, Sean beats Bronte to death, drags her body into the ocean and then dips when he spots Brian Elliott (Damien Garvey) gunning towards them.
Brian attempted to save Bronte by performing CPR, but unfortunately, the photographer couldn’t be saved.
After a dramatic fight with Kieran in the caves, Sean is finally arrested for the deaths of both Gabby and Bronte.
