Here’s what David Montgomery was thinking during his 80-yard TD run vs. Texans

Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery is on a hot streak. Over the last three games, he’s totaled 39 carries for 288 yards (7.4 yards per carry) and three touchdowns and had the biggest run of his career in Sunday’s win over the Texans.

It came on the first play from scrimmage and went for an 80-yard touchdown. Montgomery, who was knocked as a college prospect for lacking field-flipping juice, proved to the league that he’s more than just a between-the-tackles banger as he brings his second season to a close.

Mongomery’s huge run was a surprise for any Bears fan who’s been paying attention this season, and it’s not because there was doubt in Montgomery’s ability. Instead, Chicago’s offensive line has struggled to provide him with room to run, so when he burst through such a massive hole, all Bears fans could do was scream, ‘run!’

Apparently, Montgomery was thinking the same thing.

“Just run,” Montgomery said after the game. “At that point, it was a big enough hole that anyone could have run through.”

Montgomery finished the game with 11 carries for 113 yards and that score and added production as a receiver too. He totaled three catches for 42 yards.

With three games left on the schedule, Montgomery is inching closer to that badge-of-honer 1,000-yard rushing mark. He’s carried the ball 170 times for 760 yards on the year and has upped his season yards-per-carry average to a top-shelf 4.5 per touch.

In a year that’s been full of doom and gloom in Chicago, Montgomery’s been a huge bright spot and a building block for 2021.
