Here's what could've happened in 'Step Brothers 2'

It remains to be seen whether Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly's beloved comedy "Step Brothers" will ever get the sequel fans have long desired, but the movie's makers at least had an idea for what a second film could look like.

Ferrell and his frequent collaborator Adam McKay _ who directed the original "Step Brothers" _ discussed a potential storyline for a follow-up to that classic 2008 movie, and the premise sounds just as wacky as the first one.

"We talked about 'Step Brothers,' and then Adam and I got sidetracked with other things," Ferrell told the New York Daily News. "We had a whole story where John and I follow our parents to live in a retirement community and try to convince them that we earned the right to retire as well."

The first "Step Brothers" centers on the mayhem that ensues when a pair of grown men who each still live with one of their parents are forced to share a roof after their folks get married.

Despite their conversations about a possible sequel, Ferrell says there aren't currently any plans to make one.

Many of Ferrell's most-popular movies, including "Elf" and "Old School," have not received a sequel, though he did star in "Anchorman 2" in 2013. He also revived his "Anchorman" character in the 2004 special "Wake Up Ron Burgundy," which served as a counterpart to the original movie that premiered that same year.

"The sequel thing is so funny because, we decided obviously to go down the road with 'Anchorman,' and we made what I thought was a really great sequel, really funny," Ferrell said. "The entertainment media and fans beg you, and beg you, and beg you for sequels, and then you make it and you definitely have a fraction that's like, 'Well, not as good as the first one.' So I guess it's a catch-22. It's a nice catch-22, because people love the movies in the first place."

Ferrell, 50, has a sequel to one of his most-recent franchises on the way, as "Daddy's Home 2" hits theaters Friday. The family comedy picks up where the last one left off, with Ferrell's character Brad and his wife's ex-husband Dusty (played by Mark Wahlberg) having put aside their differences.

That harmony is threatened, however, when Brad's father (John Lithgow) and Dusty's father (Mel Gibson) each come to town for the holidays.

Ferrell initially didn't expect to make a second "Daddy's Home" movie, but was willing to do so as long as it involved a worthwhile storyline with strong new characters.

"We were like, 'We gotta get iconic guys playing those dads. If we can't find it, I don't know if its worth doing the movie,'" Ferrell said. "That's kind of how it happened, and luckily we kind of landed with Mel and John, and they were perfect in the roles."
