Here's what Birds Bakery has lined up for Christmas

Birds Bakery expects to sell a whopping 400,000 mince pies over the festive season - but this year there's also a twist on the traditional favourite.

The 50p Christmas treat has been on sale since the start of October, with 2,000 arriving daily in shops across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

The mince pies are made from the same recipe bakers used in 1919, when the company was first created - and it's a closely-guarded secret, said Birds' sales and marketing director, Mike Holling.

"It's the short crispiness of the pastry and its succulent filling that makes them so good," he added.

This year the bakery has introduced a new Christmas tartlet, which is a twist on the traditional mince pie.

"It has a frangipane topping rather than a short crust lid and is topped with our Christmas-themed icing faces," said Mr Holling.

The mince pies are not vegan friendly, but the Christmas tartlets are suitable for vegetarians.

As well as the annual variety of Christmas puddings, cupcakes, lollies and chocolate logs , new offerings this year include chocolate soldiers and gingerbread Santas. Dark chocolate soldiers are suitable for vegans.
