Bill Belichick is known for many things — and cutting the sleeves on his hoodies sits near the top.
The New England Patriots head coach has donned the look for over a decade and it’s become part of his identity on the field. Whether it’s a fashion statement or just a comfortability thing has remained unknown. The main thing everyone can associate with the look is a lot of winning and monotone press conferences.
NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran took a dive into the origin of it, and it’s actually hilarious. It turns out to be one of the most practical reasons possible.
“My arms are too short,” Belichick said.
After the Patriots Super Bowl XXXIX win over then Philadelphia Eagles in 2004, Belichick was overly distracted by the hoodie sleeves. In the fall of 2005, he simply cut the sleeves off and started a look that will stick with him forever.
As stated in the video, his playoff record isn’t the greatest while rocking the sleeveless hoodie — it might be time to retire it in the postseason.
