Here’s exactly when thunderstorms will arrive today as NEW weather warnings issued for Edinburgh

The Met Office has issued a new weather warning for Edinburgh as the spell of hot weather is due to come to a spectacular end late today.

Yesterday the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for Edinburgh with thunder and lightning set to batter the city in the next few hours.

Today this warning was joined by a yellow warning of rain – with residents warned that flooding could impact journey times and even endanger homes and businesses.

Edinburgh residents have been warned that “Thunderstorms causing flooding and disruption in a few places” are on their way.

The yellow warning also says flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

“Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life,” it adds.

Edinburgh could also be set for power cuts and transport problems as lightning strikes fry parts of the electrical grid.

When is the thunder due?

The yellow warning for thunderstorms is active from noon on Friday June 26 to 9am on Saturday June 27.

The yellow warning for rain becomes active at 9am on Saturday June 27 and runs until 10pm that evening.

At the time of writing the BBC weather forecast has lightning due to arrive at 6pm this evening with a high chance of heavy rain.

The thunderstorms are forecast to carry on until 10pm as a band of intense rain passes over us from the West.
