Here’s Everything You Need To Know Before You Watch The Conjuring: Last Rites
As a diehard horror fan, I can’t believe that The Conjuring universe is coming to an end in The Conjuring: Last Rites. A full 12 years and nine (!!) movies later, we’re about to say goodbye to the franchise that made us never look at dolls in the same way again.
In anticipation of The Conjuring: Last Rites landing in cinemas on September 4, we’ve pulled together all the key bits and bobs to prep you for the big finale to The Conjuring series.
In other words: get your holy water ready.
What is The Conjuring based on?
The Conjuring movies follow husband and wife paranormal investigators and demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. Their job is to dive headfirst into haunting situations and (hopefully) make it go away. Think Ghostbusters, but instead of a proton pack, they exorcise the demons.
Each movie is inspired by a real-life haunting case, which makes the series all the more creepy. The great part, though, is that each film acts as a standalone. In other words, you don’t need to have seen any previous films in the series to get your terror on with The Conjuring: Last Rites.

What’s the TL;DR on The Conjuring universe?
If you love some juicy lore, then here’s everything you need to know.
The film that started it all was The Conjuring (2013), set in 1971. It was loosely based on the real-life story of Roger and Carolyn Perron, who claimed their Rhode Island farmhouse was haunted by a number of spirits. Some of those spirits were benign, others were… more evil.
Both Roger and Carolyn, as well as their five daughters, claimed to have encounters with the spirits, ranging from rotten odours and odd noises to full-blown apparitions.
Eventually, the family called paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who performed a séance to help rid the house of its spirits.

“My mother began to speak a language not of this world in a voice not her own,” one of the Perron daughters, Andrea, told USA Today in 2013. “Her chair levitated, and she was thrown across the room.”
Eventually, the Perrons moved out, but their experiences became legendary. The Perron story inspired The Conjuring, which was so successful that it spawned an entire franchise.
Luckily, there was a rich vein to tap from; the real-life Ed and Lorraine Warren were prominent in the 1970s and connected to a number of infamous hauntings, including the Amityville house and the Enfield Poltergeist case. The series has spawned nine films, taking inspiration both from the Warrens’ story and the haunted artefacts they’ve come across, most of which are housed in their paranormal museum.
We’re not saying The Conjuring franchise ruined dolls for us forever, but we’re not not saying that, either.

What is The Conjuring: Last Rites going to be about?
The Conjuring: Last Rites is inspired by the true story of Jack and Janet, who in 1973 moved into a Pennsylvania apartment with their four daughters. The Smurls claimed their house was haunted by a demon, which they said threw their dog against a wall, pushed their daughter down a flight of stairs, and assaulted both of them.
In 1986, the Warrens were called on to investigate. “We’re dealing with an intelligence here,” Ed told The Times Leader in August 1986. “It’s powerful, intangible and very dangerous.”
Whether the haunting was real or not has been debated ever since, but the story continues to fascinate.
In the trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites, Lorraine says the demon is one they’ve encountered before.
“We were young, we were scared,” Lorraine says. “We ran away. And after all these years, it wasn’t done with our family.”
Cue a trailer that will make even the hardest of horror fans feel a shiver down their spine.
While we don’t yet know the demon that the Warrens and Smurls are dealing with in The Conjuring: Last Rites, there’s a chance it could be Valak, a.k.a. a demonic nun who’s returned to antagonise the Warrens across multiple films.
Screaming, crying, throwing up.
