Here is when petrol and diesel prices are set to be slashed

Petrol and diesel are set to fall by 20c a litre from midnight tonight.

The Irish Mirror has learned that Government ministers are set to sign off on this cut to excise duties on Wednesday morning and it will come into effect from midnight.

This will see the cost of filling your tank with petrol or diesel slashed by up to €10 a fill-up for a regular tank that can hold 50 litres.

The final number is still being thrashed out and will ultimately be decided by ministers at a specially-convened incorporeal Cabinet meeting.

But a senior Government source close to the negotiations told the Mirror that 20c is the number that will “be on the table.”

“The reason we can move on excise is because it is a fixed amount, 43c on diesel and 54c on petrol - and it is the only one we can move on without consulting the EU.”

He added that, unfortunately, since there is no excise charged on home heating oil, there will be no relief in the cost of heating your home.

The war in Ukraine has seen the costs of energy soar even higher in the last two weeks, on top of huge increases already over recent months.

The Government agreed a €200 energy bonus for every household in the country as part of a €500million cost of living package just last month.

But this has already been eaten up by costs rising again on foot of the Russian war in Ukraine.
