'Here comes another lockdown': Scenes at packed Leeds nightclubs on Freedom Day split the city

Nightclubs across the country flung open their doors at the stroke of midnight this morning to celebrate ‘Freedom Day’.

It marked the start of the government’s stage four plan to ease Covid-19 restrictions - which has seen the rules relaxed around social distancing and wearing face coverings inside.

Leeds city centre was buzzing in the early hours of this morning (19/07) as hundreds of party-goers flocked to their favourite clubs that had been shut since March 2020.

Pictures taken on the night showed punters making the most of the relaxed rules - with many seen partying the night away on the dance floor.

And some of those, who decided against venturing out on the first night of freedom, were pleased to see other’s having such a good time - but others said they were concerned another lockdown might be on the cards.

Sharing their thoughts on social media, one person wrote: “Hope they all had the best night!!

“So good to see people out dancing and enjoying themselves.”

“Good for them hope they had an amazing night,” a second person agreed.

Another noted that it was good to see the businesses reopen again.

“Great to see people supporting those businesses that have been forced to close for the last 18 months,” they wrote.

However, another person, commented on the seemingly confusing change in rules.

They said: “Not a mask in sight yet we have been told we still have to wear them at work and shopping centres are saying you still have to wear them.

“It’s good for people to finally be able to enjoy some freedom but hope it doesn’t come crashing down on us all.”

Others seemed to agree, and shared their concerns that there might be another lockdown.

“Well that’s Christmas and New Year in lockdown again!” one said.

Another wrote: “Enjoy here comes another lockdown at Christmas.”

A third agreed: “Be back in lockdown in a month thanks to this kind of thing.”

"Good to see some normality but it won't last long enjoy while you can," another added.

Another person simply wondered if the party-goers had managed to make it into work in the morning.

They wrote: “I take it none of them had work this morning? Probably a lot of sore heads today too.”
