A descendant of the inventor James Watt, Dr Frederick Watt is not one to let health and safety and the lack of tea facilities stand in the way of progress. After transforming his rooms into the world's first steam-powered spaceship, Dr Watt is soon chugging towards the moon at 26mph with grocer Robert Evans in tow. Will they get back in time for tea? Is this a giant step for mankind? Are there really angels in the Evans - I mean, heavens?
One of the companies facing a funding chop from Arts Council England, Rejects Revenge stares into the black hole with its customary good humour. Dr Watt even manages to get in a few jibes about his lack of funding by the "Science Council", as all the money is being diverted to the 1908 Olympics. To be honest, Here Be Monsters, created in difficult circumstances, is not a classic Rejects show, or in the same league as the company's classic Victorian spoof, Peasouper. But it has a warm heart, and the company should develop the Forkbeard Fantasy-style mix of live action and film that it experiments with here.
It just needs to be braver both in its pursuit of supreme silliness and in its examination of the relationship between Watt and Evans. You want to know more about what it is that brings these two men together on Thursday afternoons. By the time you read this, Rejects Revenge will know whether their funding will be continued or not. Whatever happens, they won't be disappearing. "Our name is no accident," writes artistic director Ann Farrar in the programme. "We'll always be here. After all, you can't really reject a reject, can you?"
