Denver Broncos new backup quarterback Jeff Driskel will have a salary cap hit of $1.75 million this season. Newly acquired defensive lineman Jurrell Casey will have a much larger price tag.
Denver agreed to trade a seventh-round draft pick to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for Casey on Wednesday. By trading for Casey, the Broncos also agreed to take on his contract, which has three years remaining.
This season, Casey will be owed a $11.25 million base salary, a $437,500 roster bonus and a $100,000 workout bonus, according to Spotrac.com. That adds up to create a total salary cap hit of $11,787,500 in 2020.
Casey’s salary and cap hits will increase in the final two years of his deal. In 2021, the defensive end will have a cap hit of $12.281 million, according to Spotrac. In 2022, Casey will have a cap hit of $13.85 million.
If Spotrac’s accounting is accurate, Denver could cut Casey at any time without a “dead money” cap hit (the dead money will be on Tennessee’s books). If that’s accurate, trading for Casey was a low-risk move with the potential for big reward. We’re tracking all the team’s moves here.
