WASHINGTON _ House Democrats are meeting Wednesday morning on a decision that could shape history: Should they begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump?
Speaker Nancy Pelosi is convening a special caucus meeting to discuss oversight matters, including the impeachment question.
The party's caucus is divided. Pelosi has resisted initiating impeachment proceedings, arguing that they could swamp the party's policy agenda.
But some leaders in the caucus have pressed the speaker on the matter, including House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, the panel with jurisdiction over impeachment.
Democrats who favor initiating impeachment proceedings point out it will strengthen their legal standing as they grapple with President Donald Trump's resistance to their investigations, including his defiance of their subpoenas. Others say it is a constitutional duty of the legislative branch to properly oversee the executive.
