January approaches as 2018 sheds its skin in favor of a shiny new year.
This also means shiny new video games—shiny new free video games if you happen to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold on Xbox One or Xbox 360.
This coming month is a very good month for Xbox Games With Gold, with at least two games that I very much enjoyed landing in the near future. Let’s take a look.
Xbox One
- WRC 6 FIA World Rally Championship (68% on Metacritic) Jan 16th – Feb 15th
- Celeste (94% on Metacritic) Jan 1st – 31st
Xbox 360 (Backwards Compatible)
- Far Cry 2 (85% on Metacritic) Jan 16th – 31st
- Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (85% on Metacritic) Jan 1st – 15th
This is a pretty stellar lineup even just from a review score perspective. I’ll freely admit that games with the word “Rally” in the title generally aren’t my cup of tea, so I can’t really speak to the quality or lack thereof with regards to WRC 6.
However, Celeste is a tremendous game. Tremendously difficult, too. It’s a challenging, gripping side-scrolling platformer with an incredible soundtrack and a deeper message about internal struggle. By no means should you miss this game while it’s free to download.
Far Cry 2 is the last game in that series to not be part of the Ubisoft formula. It’s nothing like the games from 3 onward. I love the entire series, even the original which I found completely hilarious, but Far Cry 2 is unique among them for too many reasons to list here. I’ve only ever played it on PC, so I’m not sure how good the Xbox 360 port is. Worth downloading regardless.
I’ve never played Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, but it does sound intriguing. A co-op Tomb Raider game filled with puzzles? Interesting. This is pre-reboot so, like Far Cry 2, comes before a new trilogy set forth to redefine the franchise.
