Pumpkins, skeletons and kids dressed up like Fortnite characters are all in our very near future.
That’s because September is shuffling off this mortal coil and October is on the rise. Get ready for fall colors, falling leaves and cool autumn days.
And, of course, a new batch of free Xbox One and Xbox 360 games for Xbox Gold subscribers.

This is actually another pretty good month for Xbox gamers, with a couple fun (if not terribly exciting) free games on Xbox One and two Xbox 360 titles that are backwards compatible.
Here they are:
- Overcooked! – Available October 1 to 31 on Xbox One (80% on Metacritic)
- Victor Vran – Available October 16 to November 15 on Xbox One (77% on Metacritic)
- Stuntman: Ignition – Available October 1 to 15 on Xbox One and Xbox 360 (75% on Metacritic)
- Hitman: Blood Money – Available October 16 to 31 on Xbox One and Xbox 360 (82% on Metacritic)
The nice thing about Microsoft’s free Games with Gold titles is that even the Xbox 360 games can be downloaded and played on your Xbox One. That’s a distinct advantage over Sony’s PlayStation Plus games.
The PS3 and PS Vita games feel almost completely irrelevant now that we’re so far into the PS4 era. But these Xbox 360 titles are playable on your current system, making them much more valuable. Overall, Games with Gold has been a better proposition than PS+ for a while now, though it still lacks the occasional Sony exclusive masterpiece like Bloodborne.
In any case, you can play some fun couch co-op craziness with Overcooked! or slay demons in the loot-and-slash action-RPG Victor Vran (think Diablo.) Both are plenty of fun and worth downloading for the super low cost of “free.” I suppose Victor Vran and its demonic foes constitutes Microsoft’s Halloween offering, though I’d argue Sony’s is a bit more fitting this month.
I’ve never played Stuntman: Ignition, but I did play Hitman: Blood Money and enjoyed it a great deal (though I played on PC back in the day.) If you enjoy stealth-assassination games, definitely give this one a spin. Be warned: It’s pretty old at this point and will look quite dated. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s a very good game.
