A group of cyclists stopped alongside a road in Glacier National Park was surprised when a herd of bighorn sheep came strolling by before taking off in a trot up the road.
Kyle Trebotich, who captured video of the encounter Sunday afternoon, was among six riders that were halfway to Logan Pass on Going-to-the-Sun Road, of which a portion continues to be closed to vehicle traffic.
“We were on a snack break,” Trebotich explained to USA Today/For The Win Outdoors. “All of a sudden we see the sheep start to come round the bend. There were riders on their way down hauling at about 30-plus mph and we had to yell at them to stop and slow down.
“I was pretty blown away seeing those sheep up close. Wondered if I should get behind a barricade, but felt safe enough. They jogged on through.”

“I didn’t ask how frequently this sort of thing happens, but imagine it is even less likely once cars are on the road and it is the high season for the park.”
As it stands now, incidentally, the earliest date the upper portion of Going-to-the-Sun Road will open to vehicle traffic is June 22, according to the National Park Service.
