Hens' Shed bringing women of Derry together post lockdown

A new women's group is being launched this week at Pilots Row in Derry.

The Triax Neighbourhood Management Team run several initiatives and voluntary services across Derry.

This week they will be opening a Hens' Shed to bring the women of Derry together again post-lockdown. The launch of this will consist of a coffee morning on Thursday September 23 at 11am.

Donna McCloskey, Manager at the Triax team spoke to MyDerry about this new initiative.

She said: "We did a number of initiatives helping the community throughout lockdown. Now that we have an opportunity to let people socialise again we thought of doing a Hens' Shed.

"We wanted a women's group just to get women together and discuss issues that matter to them and do things that they want to do."

The Hens' Shed will be entirely member based, with the launch and first couple of weeks being used as a platform for ideas and activities.

Donna added: "We want the women to lead what we do. The coffee morning will be to meet all the women taking part, to talk to individuals, find out what they need and build a programme from there.

"The first couple of weeks we will just be listening to hear what the women want. We want to have it led by the ladies, whether the activities are upcycling, flower arranging, anything they want to suggest we will take on board."

Donna had a message to encourage women who may be interested to come along to the coffee morning launch.

She said: "Everyone can take it all at their own speed. We want to say to anyone interested, come and give it a go, let us know what you are thinking.

"If there are women in your life you feel like would benefit from it let us know and we will contact them.

"If you do not feel like you are up for a coffee morning but would want a chat, give us a call or drop a message on our Facebook. We are here to take it at whatever speed you want

A number of community groups and projects have taken to social media to advertise this new women's group.

Donna added: "There is definitely an energy out there for this. There has been a great push on social media for it. We want people to benefit from this and they can learn new skills. It is also a space to just be sociable if that is all you want from the group.

"It is for the women, led by the women."
