Henry Thomas who played Elliott in 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' arrested for DUI after passing out at wheel

Actor Henry Thomas, who is best known for playing Elliot in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, has been arrested for driving under the influence (DUI), it's emerged.

Officers from the Tualatin Police Department in Oregon found him passed out behind the wheel of his car and were reportedly forced to wake him up during the incident on Monday.

They'd received a call from a driver reporting a car had stopped in the middle of a residential intersection with someone behind the wheel.

He was taken to Washington County Jail on suspicion of intoxication after he showed signs of drinking, according to TMZ.

Thomas, 48, has been booked for a misdemeanor of driving under the influence.

It appears that he is still in police custody.

The Washington Country Jail told KATU2 that Thomas would be released from custody when he was sober.

Thomas found fame as Elliot in the 1982 science fiction film when he was just 11-years-old.

He recently said that his family thought the role was just a "fluke".

Thomas told the Daily Mail: "It seemed like a one off thing that I got a part in the movie and I think my parents thought that.

"To them it was just a fluke. They didn’t want to move. They didn't want to change anything.

"My mum didn't enjoy leaving the house or even wearing shoes, she really hated it.

"So I felt a bit of pressure to not fully invest myself in that world and to stay grounded in home life."

After E.T. he's had several starring roles in TV shows and films.

Most recently, he starred in the Netflix horror series Haunting of Hill House.
