Henry Hammond pleads not guilty to Parkville murder of Courtney Herron

The 27-year-old man accused of murdering of Courtney Herron in an inner-city Melbourne park has pleaded not guilty in court.

Ms Herron, 25, was found dead by dogwalkers near a pile of logs in Parkville's Royal Park in May.

Henry Hammond was charged with one count of murder the next day.

Mr Hammond fronted the Melbourne Magistrates' Court by video link today as Ms Herron's family sat in the courtroom.

He sat silent in a green t-shirt issued by the prison as Magistrate Peter Reardon confirmed there was "sufficient evidence" on the charge of murder for him to be placed on trial.

"Do you plead guilty or not guilty?" Magistrate Reardon asked.

Ms Herron's mother sobbed loudly as Mr Hammond responded "not guilty".

Ms Herron's death prompted an outpouring of grief in Melbourne, with a silent vigil held at Royal Park in the week after her death.

The young woman had no fixed address at the time of her death.

The matter will next be heard in the Supreme Court in January.
