LOS ANGELES – The return of “Triple C” is getting closer, but he still doesn’t know which of his titles he’ll defend first.
UFC bantamweight and flyweight champion Henry Cejudo is recovering from June shoulder surgery and is looking to return early next year. But Cejudo (15-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) still hasn’t made up his mind yet on whether he’ll be returning at 125 or 135 pounds, as top contenders from both divisions await.
“I probably have about a month left in order for me to start training again, so I’m looking forward to fighting sometime in March,” Cejudo said Tuesday during Dominance MMA media day. “Whether that’s going to be with Joe (Benavidez), there’s guys here even on the stage that we could possibly fight. As of now, get healthy, talk to the man Ali (Abdelaziz).”
Sitting up on the stage with Cejudo was the likes of former bantamweight champ Cody Garbrandt, former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar, who will compete at bantamweight for his next fight, and Marlon Moraes, whom Cejudo defeated to capture the vacant bantamweight title in June.
While UFC president Dana White previously has mentioned that Cejudo needs to defend his flyweight title vs. Benavidez or give up his belt, it appears Cejudo is more interested in the 135-pound division, which has more notable names in the sport.
For now, “Triple C” still has some time to make his decision as he looks to return in the first quarter of 2020.
