Henry Cavill begins intense training for Highlander reboot role

Henry Cavill offers exciting update on Highlander reboot.

In a recent update, actor Henry Cavill shared exciting news about his involvement in the long-awaited Highlander reboot. Directed by Chad Stahelski, known for his work on the John Wick films, the project has been in development since 2008 when the rights to the franchise were acquired by Lionsgate subsidiary Summit Entertainment. The new Highlander movie, which will kick off a potential franchise, features a script written by Mike Finch, known for his work on John Wick: Chapter 4.

During an interview with Collider while promoting his latest film Argylle, Cavill disclosed that he is about to start his intensive training for the Highlander reboot. Although he didn't delve into the plot or any specifics about the film's approach to the iconic property, he expressed his enthusiasm, saying, 'The training is about to begin in earnest. It'll be a very long training process, and I'm very excited to get into it. There's only so much I can tell you at the moment. I want to keep everything under wraps for as long as possible.'

The original Highlander movie, released in 1986, initially received mixed reviews and had a modest box office performance. However, it later gained a devoted cult following. While subsequent sequels failed to capture the magic of the original, the franchise experienced a resurgence with the popular spinoff television show titled Highlander: The Series, starring Adrian Paul, which ran for six seasons. This series spawned another spinoff called Highlander: The Raven, as well as two movies set within the established continuity.

Given this history, it is unlikely that Cavill's Highlander reboot will be a mere replica of the original film. Although he is expected to step into Christopher Lambert's role as Connor MacLeod, the director has indicated that he will draw inspiration from the television series as well. While the exact elements Stahelski plans to incorporate remain a mystery, it suggests that he intends to create a more intricate and expansive world of immortals than what was introduced in 1986.

One challenge the later movies and TV series faced was how to circumvent or retcon the original film's resolution, as it portrayed MacLeod as the ultimate victor in his battle for 'The Prize.' However, with Stahelski's desire to establish an ongoing Highlander franchise, it is likely that Cavill's journey as MacLeod will be extended, paving the way for a more complex narrative.

Fans of the original Highlander and newcomers alike can anticipate an exciting revival of the beloved franchise. With the combination of Henry Cavill's talent, Chad Stahelski's directorial prowess, and a fresh take on the mythology, the Highlander reboot holds the promise of reigniting the iconic tale of immortal swordsmen and their quest for power.
