Henrik Larsson pictured at Southend United as Celtic icon in the running to become new boss

Celtic legend Henrik Larsson was given the VIP treatment at Southend United on Saturday as he entered the running to become new boss.

The Swede quit Helsingborgs for the second time earlier this summer and is now reportedly a candidate to replace Kevin Bond at Roots Hall.

The Southend Echo report Larsson's presence at the club's visit to MK Dons is NOT confirmation he will be hired, but say the 48-year-old is very much a candidate.

Caretaker manager Gary Waddock is also being considered and interviews are set to take place this week.

Southend sit second bottom of League One and are still without a win this season.

Larsson was originally ruled out of contention but could now be set for a return to British football following a 12-year absence.

His last role on UK soil was a loan spell with Manchester United in 2007.

Larsson left Helsingborgs in August, his second stint in charge, over alleged personal abuse directed at by supporters.

The Celtic hero originally managed the Allsvenskan outfit in 2016 but quit after losing a relegation play off where he and his son Jordan, who played for the club, were attacked on the pitch by a group of fans.
