Indefinitely away from the Cleveland Cavaliers, longtime LeBron James teammate and Klutch Sports represented guard JR Smith opened up about his life during a lengthy interview.
Smith appeared alongside former NBA players Quentin Richardson and Darius Miles on their “Knuckleheads” podcast and discussed how one of his nicknames came to popularity (via The Players’ Tribune):
“Bro, no lie, this is the third glass of Henny I’ve ever had … Word, shout out to Hennessy. I’ll take the name. I appreciate it. Keep pushing it … I’m the ‘Henny God’ and this is like my third glass. I’m like, alright cool, I’ll take it.”
The former NBA champion spoke about how his reputation went from Sixth Man of the Year to “Henny God” of the Year seemingly overnight without a legitimate cause.
Richardson said that Smith “never lived up to the hype” as a drinker and he mostly viewed him as a fairly quiet, hard-working player. You can watch the confession from Smith above.
This, however, is not the first time that Smith has mentioned this ironic truth. Back in February 2017, he described it as “another lie” that was told to fans.
Around the same time, he told his followers on Twitter that he doesn’t really drink liquor anymore because it takes a toll on his body but would be happy to drink wine any time.
Smith knows his life better than anyone else does and while he does not seem upset about the nickname, it certainly seems that this is not one rooted in fact.
