Henley Beach parking meters to be removed after public backlash

Traders said the introduction of paid parking at Henley Beach caused a drop in business.

Adelaide's Charles Sturt Council has made a unanimous decision to remove parking meters from popular Henley Beach.

Last month, the council introduced a $2 per hour charge for a maximum stay of three hours in the car parks to the north and south of the popular Henley Square precinct.

But after a huge public backlash, amid concerns paid parking was turning people away from the tourist precinct, the council last night axed the meters.

Councillor Jassmine Wood said the council had made the correct decision and praised the actions of protesters.

"They came out in droves to tell us that it just wasn't the right thing to do, to charge," she said.

"Thank goodness we [council] listened and they had a win.

"I've never been so proud to be the elected member for the Henley residents."

Traders had blamed the paid parking for a drop in business and a petition attracted 8,000 signatures.

Ms Wood said the machines would be sold to recoup some of the installation costs.
