A police officer has been stabbed following a chase in north London.

Officers had been called to Hendon Way, in Hendon, following reports of a man seen with a knife shortly after 1pm on Friday.

The suspect ran off as police arrived, with officers pursuing him on foot before he stabbed one of them in the arm.

He was Tasered before being arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm (GBH).

The man was later taken to hospital as a precaution.

The injured officer was also taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Chief Superintendent Roy Smith, commander of the Metropolitan Police’s north west borough command unit, said: “This is another example of the dangers our officers face on a daily basis as they go about their duty protecting the people of London.

“Knowing that there were reports of a man in possession of a knife, this police constable and his colleagues ran to challenge and apprehend him – these are truly brave actions.

“I have visited the injured officer in hospital and thankfully he should make a full recovery from his injury.”

The police investigation continues.
