Hemmes' son awarded $1.75m from estate of father he never met

The court heard Edward Cameron made attempts to meet his father over the years, but they were rebuffed.

The son of late Sydney fashion retailer John Hemmes has been awarded $1.75 million from his father's estate.

Edward Cameron, 27, was born after a relationship between his mother, Fiona, and Mr Hemmes ended.

Mr Hemmes died in 2015 at the age of 83, after suffering multiple myeloma.

The court heard Mr Cameron made attempts to meet his father over the years, but they were rebuffed.

Mr Cameron had been seeking more than $4 million from his father's estate, however lawyers for the executor told the court if any money were to be awarded, it should be much less than $1 million.

Supreme Court Justice Geoff Lindsay today agreed provisions should be granted to Mr Cameron and awarded him $1.75 million from his father's estate.

Mr Cameron looked downcast as the judgement was handed down and he declined to speak to the media as he left court.

Mr Hemmes and his wife Merivale revolutionised Australia's fashion industry in the 1960s, establishing The House of Merivale which stocked the latest trends.

The Hemmes family, now led by Justin Hemmes, owns multiple high-profile hotels and bars including the Ivy and The Establishment in central Sydney.

The Merivale Group is reportedly worth more than $1 billion.

While Mr Cameron never met or spoke directly with his father, Justin and John Hemmes were very close.

Days after his father died, Justin Hemmes posted a tribute on Instagram.

"I'm going to miss this beautiful remarkable man. My best friend and mentor in life. Love you to the stars and back a thousand times. You have left an incredible legacy pops."
