HelpingACT able to help more

Sixty food hampers have been packed and delivered to newly-arrived Afghan evacuees in Canberra, thanks to local charity HelpingACT.

Member for Fenner Andrew Leigh, ACT Multicultural Affairs Minister Tara Cheyne and Mainul Haque from the Rotary Club of Hall were among those who helped pack the hampers from the Franklin garage of HelpingACT president Mohammed Ali over the long weekend.

The hampers of fresh and packaged food, including an obligatory packet of Aussie fav Tim Tams, were delivered to the Red Cross in Canberra on Tuesday for distribution to the new arrivals.

Helping ACT also organised food parcels for food pantries in Gungahlin, Ainslie and the city. Coles supermarkets helped in the donation of food.

Helping others will be a little easier for HelpingACT which has hired a storage site in Mitchell for food donations, which means more space than Mr Ali's garage, which has worked overtime in the last few years as the nerve centre for the grassroots organisation.

Anyone in need of fresh or packaged food should contact HelpingACT on 0404 947 260.
