Helping Renfrewshire homeless is icing on the cake for young bake sale duo

Two talented little pals have baked up a storm and raised more than £180 for a homeless charity.

Marni Sloan and Amelie Wake, both seven, have been friends for years since going to nursery together.

Both girls are in P3 — Marni at Ralston Primary and Amelie at St John Ogilvie — and have been best friends since they were at nursery together.

They decided to organise a bake sale in their street — and collected an incredible £187 for Shelter Scotland.

Marni’s mum Lisa said: “Amelie and her mum Kathryn were out and saw a homeless man and they decided to raise money to help homeless people.

“They drew posters about a month ago and put them up around the streets, then they put flyers through the doors and told people in school.

“It’s grown arms and legs.

“We just went with it because they were so keen on doing it and it kept them busy.

“We’ve got a good wee community in the street and we had a couple of other mums and their kids come along.

“We also had some random people walking by who stopped and went home with a load of cakes.

“The girls wanted to raise £50, but it ended up being £187 – for two hours standing in the pouring rain.”

For sale at the stall on the corner of Whitehaugh Drive and Mathieson Street, in Paisley , were delicious cupcakes, chocolate Easter nests, an Easter cake made by Marni’s gran and lots more.

Lisa said the most popular was some unicorn bark which the girls made by melting white chocolate and adding food colouring.

Lisa took the girls to the Shelter Scotland office to hand over the final amount.

She said: “The staff were delighted with what they had done.

“They were really overwhelmed and taken aback by how much the girls had raised.

“They gave them some Shelter Scotland T-shirts and hats and got them the big presentation cheque.

“They’re going to keep in touch and tell the girls what their money has been spent on.”

Lisa added: “I’m absolutely delighted with what they’ve achieved.

“They put this on themselves, then handed that money over and saw the response from the people at Shelter Scotland.

“It was really important to make the effort to take the girls to the office so they could understand where it was going.”

And if anyone missed out on some delicious homemade treats this time around, don’t worry.

Lisa said: “They’re already planning their next one.

“They want to do it all again in the summer.”
