Helping Dumfries and Galloway residents stuck at home to stay active in isolation

A former Solway Sharks captain and Dumfries gym owner is one of hundreds of people across the region who has been forced to shut down their business amidst the coronavirus crisis.

Mark Gallagher has spent the last five and a half years building Synergy Performance at Heathhall into a popular and well-respected health and fitness facility for people of all abilities.

The doors of gyms across Dumfries and Galloway might be firmly closed for now, but Mark insists being in lockdown doesn’t mean we don’t need to exercise.

In fact, keeping moving has never been more important, not just for our physical health, but our mental health.

Mark has devised a workout for our readers thtat we can all try from home. He said: “Our worlds have been turned upside down recently and more now than ever we need to focus on staying active and being as health conscious as possible.

“That may be from the comfort of your own home with some time outside each day to walk, run or cycle.

“You may be new to exercise or a regular gym goer, either way we are all having to adapt to this new (hopefully) temporary lifestyle.

“That is why we have provided you with this home workout that anyone can do virtually anywhere.

“We have six bodyweight exercises that you can do at home and all you need is potentially a kitchen work top and a chair.

“They are: Squat, Push Ups, Glute Bridges, Knee Tucks, Reverse Lunges, Plank

“Just a couple of pointers when performing the exercises. If you struggle to squat or lunge under control then use a chair for support. If doing full push ups on the floor is too challenging then use the kitchen work top as your push up surface.

“Perform each exercise for between 30 seconds and one minute and try to do between two and four full rounds of all six exercises. “
