Help with council tax for 20,000 of Nottingham’s most vulnerable residents

More than 20,000 "financially-vulnerable" households in Nottingham are set to receive council tax discounts of up to £150 to help them through the Covid-19 crisis.

Letters are being sent out by Nottingham City Council to all working-age households currently in receipt of Council Tax Support, informing them of the discount and how it will be applied to their bills for 2020/21.

This will impact on 20,262 accounts.

Council tax payers in Nottingham again saw their bills increase by the maximum amount in April.

Money for this scheme comes from the Government’s overall £500m 'Hardship Fund' for local government to provide support to economically-vulnerable households.

The Government expects most of this funding to be used to provide more council tax relief, either through existing council tax support schemes or through complementary reliefs.

Eligible households don’t need to take any immediate action as they will be receiving a letter with full details of their discount award and over the next few days.

Portfolio holder for finance, growth and city centre at the authority, Councillor Sam Webster, said: “This epidemic crisis is unprecedented and we know that many people are concerned about the impact on their household finances.

"This council tax discount will help thousands of our most financially vulnerable working-age citizens in Nottingham over the coming weeks and months.

“If you’re currently receiving Council Tax Support, it’s important to know that there’s no need to make a separate claim as the discount will be automatically applied to your bills.”
