We were saddened though not surprised to read that only a quarter of people see hedgehogs on a regular basis (Report, 14 June). We’ve known for a number of years now that hedgehogs are in decline in the UK and so we joined forces with People’s Trust for Endangered Species to deliver the Hedgehog Street project. Hedgehog Street is designed to help combat the decline by getting people to help hedgehogs, doing simple, small things that can have a big impact. So far over 38,000 people have signed up to be a Hedgehog Champion at www.hedgehogstreet.org. Hedgehogs have been roaming the earth for around 15m years. We must ensure they are a common sight for many more years to come.
Fay Vass
Chief executive, British Hedgehog Preservation Society
